What is YHIS-Startalk teachers program about?
YHIS has been approved and funded by NSA to offer Startalk for Teachers in the summer of 2017 so teachers of various experience levels of teaching Mandarin Chinese - from pre-service, novice to experienced - can receive intensive training and practicum experience. There are two tracks: Track I is for experienced teachers of Chinese (3 years or more), who are familiar with world-readiness standards, immersion, and inquiry-based teaching. Track I will focus on backward design, summative and formative assessments, integrated performance, NCSSFL-ACTFL can-do statements, and Teacher Effectiveness for Language Learning (TELL).
Track II is for pre-service and novice teachers. This track will focus on world-readiness standards, immersion, inquiry-based teaching, and Teacher Effectiveness for Language Learning (TELL).
All teacher participants in both tracks will be given at least one micro-teaching experience to prepare, teach, reflect, and self- and peer-assess as they teach specific groups of students in the YHIS-Startalk Students program.
What are the dates for the 2017 YHIS-Startalk Teacher program?
Track I will be held from June 26 to July 7, with no classes on July 4. Track II is from July 3 to July 14, with no classes on July 4.
When and how can I apply?
The application starts now and will close on April 10. That is, all applications must be postmarked on or before April 10, 2017. YHIS-Startalk Teacher Program requires teachers to complete an online application form ("Apply Now" button below), and submit two letters of recommendation via email. Please email to obtain a copy of the recommendation form. We will consider all the applications and compare them and weigh them against each other, then choose those teachers we think would be the most successful in our program. For submission and/or questions, please email Michelle Tan at .
What is the cost of the YHIS-Startalk program?
The federal grant money that supports the YHIS-Startalk covers the full cost of the 2-week program, so it is free of charge for the participants. The program runs from 9 am to 3:30 pm daily.
When will I know if I have been accepted?
Once the application period closes, we will make our decisions and notify applicants by April 28. Teachers on the waitlist will also be notified; several of the teachers from this list are usually accepted into the program at a later date.
